WWU Students Honored by Society of Professional Journalists

Students from Western Washington University were honored with seven Region 10 Mark of Excellence Awards by the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ), announced on April 13.

Western students won for their work at three of Western’s student-produced publications: The Western Front, Klipsun magazine, and The Planet. The MOE Awards honor the best of collegiate journalism for the 2015 calendar year; Region 10 includes Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington.

Western’s student newspaper, The Western Front, won a finalist award in the Best All-Around Non-Daily Student Newspaper category.

WWU’s environmental magazine, Planet, was named a finalist for the Best Student Magazine, and its radio show, Planet Radio, won the Mark of Excellence for Best All-Around Radio Newscast.

Sarah Sharp (Bothell) won a finalist award in the Newspaper Feature Writing category for her piece “The Bridge to Recovery.”

Two Western students were finalists in the Nonfiction Magazine Article category: Katelyn Doggett (Burlington) for “Not Your Fault” in Klipsun, and Elise Dresel (Bainbridge Island) for “Toxic Turf” in Planet.

Sam Carlos (Lynwood) won a Mark of Excellence for his radio feature, “Martian Miasma.”
