WWU Institute for Energy Studies to Host Online ‘Carbon Hackathon’ April 21
Western Washington University’s Institute for Energy Studies will host a “Carbon Hackathon” from 3-6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 21.
This is the third year the Institute for Energy Studies will host the Carbon Hackathon, and this year’s challenge focuses on reducing carbon emissions in Bellingham. Students will be divided into six teams focusing on different sectors of the economy: transportation electrification, solutions to car dependency, building decarbonization, clean electricity, eco-industrial districts, and sustainable consumption.
Teams will be mentored throughout the day by top clean-energy industry leaders from a range of organizations including the Clean Energy Transition Institute, Puget Sound Energy, Sustainable Connections, Washington Environmental Council, and Whatcom Transit Authority.
Students, faculty and community members are invited to cheer on the teams on as they present their carbon hacks and watch the judging panel select a winning team. Bellingham Mayor Seth Fleetwood will serve as one of the judges.
The event will conclude with a keynote address from John Mauro, city manager of Port Townsend and former chief sustainability officer for Auckland, New Zealand.
