WWU Honors Program hosts first Social Justice Community Engagement virtual meeting

Western's Honors Program is hosting its first virtual Social Justice Community Engagement Group for students at 2 p.m. this Thursday, Aug. 6, with professors Anika Tilland-Stafford and Katie Brian. The SJCE group will meet bi-weekly to share resources, discuss current issues concerning social and environmental justice, and explore concrete ways to support work for greater equity. While situated in Honors, SJCE welcomes students from all programs and degree stages who want to join and turn learning into social action.

Students will have the opportunity to receive mentorship in building socially distanced ways to make a difference in their communities and support each other's work for change. Topics will be group generated but may include issues such as:

  • Police violence and community alternatives
  • Food sovereignty and food justice
  • Habitat restoration and protection
  • Voter suppression

The SJCE affirms students who are transgender, queer, undocumented, first generation, Black, Indigenous, racialised, and disabled. The group actively promotes social change that works to end the systemic and institutional violence from policing to pipelines.
