WWU announces 'Global Connections' summer cross-cultural youth program

Western Washington University invites youth, grades 4-6, to take part in an exciting and powerful cross cultural summer program with students from Korea, grades 4-6, sponsored by the JLS Academy.

The Global Connections program provides opportunities for youth from diverse cultures to build connections through academic enrichment and recreational activities, while emphasizing the development of cross-cultural relationships.

During the Global Connections program, students will participate in fun, interactive morning academics and afternoon recreation with activities that foster the interconnectedness of individuals and cultures. The activities include: basic conversation practice; exchange of customs and traditions (games, songs, stories and foods); establishing a pen pal program; and developing and implementing a weekly culminating project (skit, play, talent show or story). Students will be divided into two classrooms to ensure the adult to child ratio of 1 to 10.

The Global Connections program takes place Aug. 1-19 with an option of three theme-inspired weekly sessions:

Aug. 1-5: Connecting Through Traditions: Holidays, Festivals and Celebrations

Field Trip: Aug. 3, Woodland Park Zoo

Aug. 8-12: Hobbies and Habitats: Thinking Globally-Connecting Locally

Field Trip: Aug. 10, Pacific Science Center

Aug. 15-19: Everyone is a Star: Exploring Pop Culture

Field Trip: Aug. 17, Birch Bay Water Slides

The cost of the weekly program is $200, which includes instructional materials, cafeteria lunch (four days), afternoon recreation and activities, and Wednesday field trip transportation and admission. A discount is offered for multiple weeks.
