WWU and Northwest Indian College to host ‘Pulling Together in Shared Waters’ March 8

Western Washington University’s Huxley College of the Environment and Northwest Indian College will host “Pulling Together in Shared Waters” at noon and 4 p.m. on Thursday, March 8.

Bill JamesThe first event, a keynote at noon, will take place at Northwest Indian College’s Log Building, and the second event, at 4 p.m., will be in Academic Instructional Center West 204 on Western’s campus. Both events are free and open to the public.

The event series is part of the fourth year of the Salish Sea Speaker Series. Lummi Nation Hereditary Chief Tsi’li’xw (Bill James, right) and Troy Olson of Lummi Nation will speak on the Salish Sea though the lens of weaving and harvesting cedar, and the importance of cedar and wool in Coast Salish weaving. Both speakers are master weavers. 

The event series is in recognition of Billy Frank Jr. day, which is observed on Friday, March 9 and is co-sponsored by Western’s Native American Student Association and Western’s Justice Speaks Series.
