Western's Sanford-Hill Piano Series presents Daniel Hsu Oct.12

Western Washington University’s prestigious Sanford-Hill Piano Series returns to live performances with a trio of concerts this academic year. The first pianist is 2017 Cliburn Bronze Medalist Daniel Hsu, who will perform on Oct. 12 in place of Anna Geniushene who was unable to perform because of a family emergency.

The 25-year-old Hsu will perform works by Schumann, Beethoven, and Liszt. His complete program is at cfpa.wwu.edu. Characterized by the Philadelphia Inquirer as a “poet...[with] an expressive edge to his playing that charms, questions, and coaxes,” Hsu is increasingly recognized for his easy virtuosity and bold musicianship.

Hsu captured the bronze medal and prizes for best performance of both the commissioned work and chamber music at the 2017 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, and is also a 2016 Gilmore Young Artist, first prize winner of the 2015 CAG Victor Elmaleh Competition, and bronze medalist of the 2015 Hamamatsu International Piano Competition.

The 2022-23 Sanford-Hill season sees the return of audience favorite Spencer Myer on Jan. 27, 2023 and Ukranian pianist Dmytro Choni, winner of the 2022 Cliburn Silver, on April 5.

All performances are at 7:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center Concert Hall at Western. Season tickets and single tickets are on sale now. Discounts are available for students, WWU Music majors, music teachers, and staff and faculty of Western. Ticket purchasing information – including online orders and box office hours – is at tickets.wwu.edu. Sanford-Hill Piano Series patrons enjoy complimentary parking in Lot 7G.

The Sanford-Hill Piano Series was established in 2002 by Professor Emeritus of Music, Ford Hill, and his former student, Sibyl Sanford. Professor of Piano Jeffrey Gilliam is the Artistic Director. All box office proceeds fund piano scholarships at Western.
