Two Excellence in Teaching awards available, nominations due April 2

Western Washington University President Bruce Shepard has announced that two “Excellence in Teaching” awards have again been made possible by the Western Washington University Foundation. Each award includes a $1,500 WWU Foundation fund.

A faculty member from either the College of Humanities and Social Sciences or the College of Sciences and Technology will be chosen to receive the Peter J. Elich Excellence in Teaching Award, and a faculty member from one of the other colleges -- the College of Business and Economics, Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies, the College of Fine and Performing Arts, Huxley College of the Environment and Woodring College of Education -- will be chosen to receive the Excellence in Teaching Award.

Nominations are due by April 2.

The following criteria and policies are used for selection:

  • No person shall receive this award more than once.
  • Only winners will be announced. Candidates’ names shall not be published at during or after the process.
  • Tenure is not required, but candidates must be full-time faculty members. Visiting faculty are not eligible.
  • Nominees will be asked if they wish to be considered, and, if so, will be required to submit supporting materials to the appropriate committee. Nominees from the previous year may elect to remain under consideration for the subsequent year and resubmit supporting materials.
  • The award is a teaching award, not a research award. Submitted materials should relate to teaching.
  • To secure consistency in the evaluation process: an evaluation of a current class may be sought; evaluations of previous classes should be submitted by each candidate; recommendations may be sought from faculty, as well as former and present students; and a class visitation may be conducted.
  • The committees may devise additional or alternative criteria and/or process upon announcement.
  • The committees will evaluate all material and make selections according to their best judgments.

Faculty nominations for CHSS and CST should be sent to Brent Carbajal, dean, CHSS, at MS 9099.

Faculty nominations for the other colleges should be sent to Brian Burton, dean, CBE, at MS 9072.
