Students to hold First Amendment Free Food Festival in Red Square May 12

The Western Washington University student chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists is hosting a First Amendment Free Food Festival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, May 12, in Red Square.

All WWU students, faculty and staff are welcome to a free pizza lunch, but they just must sign a contract to enter the corded-off lunch area at Red Square.

The catch? They sign away their First Amendment rights.

The outcome? Cell phones must be checked at the gate. No reading material allowed. No assembly by more than two people. No grace before lunch. No singing. And nowhere to voice your complaints about the policies.

This popular First Amendment awareness event has been staged on college campuses across the country. In addition to running the event, some SPJ members will play the role of protestors and general rabble-rousers.
