Students to blog Rwanda adventures this summer

Ten Western Washington University students are in Gashora, Rwanda, for six weeks this summer as part of a faculty-led study abroad program.

The trip is led by Lee Gulyas, English, and Tim Costello, director of the Center for Service-Learning. Students will be sharing their thoughts and reflections throughout the trip on their travel blog.

In the 12-credit Building Bridges with Rwanda program, students and faculty study equitable and productive international development efforts in Gashora while exploring and examining travel writing with an emphasis on Rwanda and Africa.

Students also get to:

• Explore the history, culture, politics and economy of Rwanda
• Engage in meaningful service-learning projects to support local development initiatives
• Learn how to nurture and sustain international partnerships
• Actively live and contribute in a global society
• Examine travel writing through literature, theory, and practice
• Discover a variety of ways to collect and use information to create original literary nonfiction
• Study current travel writing from a variety of regions and perspectives
• Analyze, interpret, discuss and practice travel writing with an emphasis on writing about, and from, Rwanda and Africa.
