WWU offers half-day summer enrichment courses for grades 4-9

Western Washington University’s Odyssey of Science & Arts courses take place the weeks of July 19 to 23 and July 26 to 30 and are designed to ignite the interest of young learners by offering a diverse array of topics for youth entering grades four through nine.

Youth can attend the weekly WWU programs for a half-day or they can choose two topics and attend for a full-day experience. The following topics currently have space available, however prompt registration is encouraged to reserve your spot in the class.

Topics for grades four through six:

  • Adventures in 3-D Sculpture - Explore design elements and principles including shape, form, positive and negative space, and basic sketching of faces.
  • Adventures in Cartooning - Design your own cartoon or comic book and learn basic animation using Adobe FLASH.
  • Everything Guitar - Discover the basics of guitar playing; and explore the history of the instrument and its music from other cultures.
  • Exploring CAD and 3-D Modeling - Transform your vision into a computer model using computer-aided design (CAD) and 3-D printing.

Topics for grades seven through nine:

  • Computer Science 101 - Explore animation, robotics and game development. Learn elements of programming: design, development, testing and debugging.
  • Creative Art: Multi-Media Drawing - Explore drawing techniques using graphite, charcoal, colored pencils and pastels, and examine design elements.
  • Crime Scene Photography - Explore the use of manual settings, shutter speed, ISO and aperture controls, and determine vital imaging of a crime scene.
  • Critter & Creature Science - Love animals? Discover the amazing world of animal science from behavior to body structure and function.
  • Expedicion in Spanish: Ole! - Join us on a fun and action-packed expedition through Latin America and learn the Spanish language.
  • Experimental Chemistry - Explore the fascinating world of chemistry and produce “pop-pop, fizz-fizz” reactions.
  • Exploring CAD and 3-D Modeling - Transform your vision into a computer model using computer-aided design (CAD) and 3D printing.
  • Everything Guitar - Discover the basics of guitar playing; and explore the history of the instrument and its music from other cultures.
  • Filmmaking in Action - Build technical skills with video cameras, find out how special effects are created and explore the different genre of films.
  • Want to be an Engineer? - Each day you will be a different type of engineer as you design, build and test your amazing inventions.
