WWU students enrolled in the Salish Sea Biodiversity, Culture, and Conservation course started class Tuesday, Aug. 9, with high spirits and a much heavier pack than most imagined as they set off on a week-long hike through the North Cascades.

Twenty one students, four faculty members and two staff have set off for Ecuador for a study abroad program with WWU’s Honors College this summer in Ecuador. The course focus is split between two main areas: a Humanities-focused exploration of the culture, history, and literature of Ecuador led by Professor of Modern and Classical Languages Amy Carbajal, and a Geology focus led by Honors College Director and Professor of Geology Scott Linneman.

Western's Board of Trustees, along with President Sabah Randhawa, the university's provost, vice presidents, and university staff, took a tour of campus facilities yesterday in preparation for the coming school year. They were given informational tours of the new Alma Clark Glass residence hall, which will be open for new students at move-in in September; the WWU Steam Plant; the Interdisciplinary Science Building on south campus, which is under construction; and new campus lab spaces.

Office of University Communications spring Visual Journalism interns Cody Clark and Hannah Gordon-Kirk will spend their quarter documenting through images the most unique and challenging academic term in Western's history. They will use their cameras to shed light on the online-only campus experience, and show Western's resilience and sense of community in the face of the coronavirus crisis.

Western Washington University hosted a free breakfast for the campus and surrounding communities on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, with a keynote from Western alumnus Jesse Moore.
