Panel discussion to help students learn more about Americorps

The Career Services Center at Western Washington University is putting on a panel discussion for students and graduates interested in exploring opportunities with AmeriCorps.

The panel, “AmeriCorps: the insider’s guide to everything you need to know,” will take place from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 9, in Viking Union Room 552. Panelists include current and former AmeriCorps members who have worked in a variety of programs.

AmeriCorps offers thousands of opportunities to graduates who seek meaningful professional experience in nonprofit and government organizations nationwide. Job assignments include community development, environmental protection, public safety, housing, youth development and more.

Panelists at this event will share insights and expert advice to help students:

• Learn more about the experience and benefits
• Find out if AmeriCorps is the right fit
• Get the inside scoop on the application process

Panelists include:

• Western graduate Robel Paguio, a current AmeriCorps member who is working as the HANDS Retention Project coordinator at Western
• Alyssa Jones, a current AmeriCorps member who is the program project manager at WWU’s Center for Service Learning
• Program managers Jen Rice, who hires and supervises more than 50 AmeriCorps members to work in education and other programs serving at-risk youth with Serve Northwest Washington
• Hollie Skinner, VISTA leader at the Washington State Boys and Girls Club

Western graduates have served in AmeriCorps positions building homes in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, teaching reading to students in low-income communities, and assisting nonprofit agencies who make a difference in our communities.
