Panel discussion to focus on marriage equality and the Supreme Court

Last month, the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments in four cases challenging state laws prohibiting issuance of marriage licenses to same sex couples and refusing to recognize marriages of same sex couples that were entered into in other states. Panelists at an upcoming "Marriage Equality at the Supreme Court:  Cultural Significance and Queer Critique" discussion will reflect on the social and legal significance of this moment, and explore limitations of and problems with single-issue advocacy centered on securing marriage rights.

The panel discussion, set for 4:30 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, in Communications Facility Room 110, will be held before the court's decision is released.

Panelists:  Tim Costello, Center for Service Learning; Marie Eaton, Fairhaven College; Josie Ellison, student; Laura Langley, Equal Opportunity Office; Kate Miller, Women, Gender & Sexuality Studies; Debra Salazar, Political Science.

The event is being organized by the Women, Gender & Sexuality Studies program.
