Nicholas Zaferatos (Huxley College) receives award for "good green design"

Nicholas Zaferatos (Huxley College of the Environment) was a recipient of the “2009 Green Good Design Award” from the European Centre for Architecture, Art, Design, and Urban Studies and the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design for his work in directing student-based research in the preparation of the Farsa Village Sustainability Redevelopment Plan on the Island of Kefalonia, Greece.

The project exemplifies principles in community sustainable development and was the product of a three-year academic service learning program that involved more 100 students from Huxley College of the Environment and other American and international universities. Participating faculty members serving as visiting instructors included WWU’s Arunas Oslapas (Industrial Design), Gigi Berardi (Huxley College), Wendy Walker (Huxley College) and Jason Levy (Huxley College).

The “Good Design” program is the oldest and most widely recognized international awards program in design. This was the first year the awards program specifically recognized green design to emphasize the importance of sustainable design and to promote international awareness about sustainable design that is occurring globally.

The Farsa Sustainable Development Plan was featured along with other awarded projects in the Green Good Design 2009 Exhibition, which was held in Athens, Greece, from July 7to Aug. 15, 2009.
