John Krieg Named Director of New WWU Office of Institutional Effectiveness

John Krieg has been named director of Western’s new Office of Institutional Effectiveness, said Brent Carbajal, WWU provost and vice president for Academic Affairs.

The Office of Institutional Effectiveness will coordinate Western’s internal data collection and analysis activities, including assessment activities related to accreditation and strategic planning.  The Office of Institutional Effectiveness is comprised of the professionals in Institutional Research and in the Office of Survey Research and will rely on their expertise as it develops over time to best serve the needs of the university.

“As we implement our new strategic plan and begin a new accreditation cycle, we’re excited by the coordination and project management opportunities that the Institutional Effectiveness model provides.  We look forward to this office providing leadership and training related to planning and assessment processes, and also in monitoring our progress toward mission fulfillment and the goals/objectives in the strategic plan,” Carbajal said. “Dr. Krieg is possessed of a great deal of experience and is particularly well positioned to communicate and coordinate work with units across campus.  I’m excited to get this new initiative started and am very pleased that Dr. Krieg will serve as director.”

Krieg is a professor of Economics at Western, where he also directs the University’s Office of Survey Research.  His research interests focus on the economics of education with specific application to teacher labor markets, policy evaluation, and employee unions.  Among others, his research has appeared in the American Education Research Journal, Education Finance and Policy, Economics of Education Review, Industrial and Labor Relations Review, and Education Evaluation and Policy.  Krieg serves as a co-director of the Teacher Education Learning Collaborative, which is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.  Krieg received his doctorate from the University of Oregon and undergraduate degrees from Northwestern University.
