John Dugan coming to campus to discuss high-impact learning experiences and student leadership Feb. 26

John Dugan, the principle investigator of the Multi-Institutional Study of Leadership (MSL), returns to Western on Tuesday, Feb. 26, to discuss how college students across the country see themselves as leaders and develop their capacity for socially responsible leadership.

The MSL is the most known measure for college student leadership, and since the spring of 2006 has included more than 60,000 participants across 52 institutions of higher education in the United States.  Dugan will talk about high-impact learning experiences that students can have on campuses that enhance their capacity and efficacy as socially responsible leaders.

Western participated in the survey in the spring of 2011 and the random sample of students on campus who participated measured on par with the national random sample.  The really good news for Western came in the form of the comparative sample scores where Western excelled nationally, even among many comparative sample populations from other schools. The WWU comparison sample of student leaders who participated were the Enrollment and Student Services paraprofessional student leaders from Academic and Career Development Services, Admissions, Associated Students, Campus Recreation, EDGE, Ethnic Student Center, New Student Services and Family Outreach, Outdoor Center, Prevention and Wellness, Residence Life, Student Outreach Services, Viking Union, and Western’s Leadership Scholars. Details regarding the results on the WWU comparative data were received in late spring 2012.

Congratulations to Academic Student Advisors, Tutors, StARs, AS Employees and Board, Rec Center Student Staff, Sports Club Presidents and Captains, EDGE Facilitators, ESC Student Staff, ESC Club Leaders, Orientation Student Advisors, Outdoor Center Student Staff and Trip Leaders, Peer Health Educators, Resident Advisors, Resident Hall Council Leaders, National Residence Hall Honorary, SOS Peer Mentors, VU Student Employees, and Western’s Leadership Scholars.

Those wishing to hear John Dugan talk about student leaders across the United States and here at Western are invited to attend one of two conversations on Tuesday, Feb. 26 at either 10 a.m. or 2 p.m. in VU 565 A/B; students across campus, as well as faculty and staff, particularly from those areas where you are developing student leaders and mentors, are encouraged to participate.

Dugan and the ESS Celebration

Western’s Enrollment and Student Services staff and paraprofessional student leaders are invited to the VU Multipurpose Room from 3:30–5:30 p.m. on Feb. 26 to hear about the national and local results, to celebrate those results, and to participate in discussing what you are doing or gaining from your Western student leading experiences. Your comments will provide qualitative feedback for the campus and national researchers. Students from among the above populations of student paraprofessional leaders who attend the session will be served pizza and be entered into a drawing for two $50 and four $25 Viking Dollars/University Bookstore awards (your choice).
