Italian Pianist Roberto Plano to Perform at WWU Jan. 18
The Sanford-Hill Piano Series sponsored by the Department of Music will present Italian concert pianist Roberto Plano on Friday, Jan. 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center Concert Hall at Western Washington University.
Plano will perform works by Respighi, Liszt, Scriabin, Villa-Lobos, Ginastera and conclude with Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue.” Plano will also conduct a masterclass on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 10 a.m. The masterclass is free and open to the public.
Plano’s debut recording of sonatas and rondos by Andrea Luchesi (1741-1801) on the Concerto Classics label in 2012, received 5 stars out of 5 from MUSICA magazine; in February 2013 he performed the world premiere of the composer’s two piano concertos with the Busoni Chamber Orchestra in Trieste, Italy, Massimo Belli conducting.
Recent events include soloist appearances with the Royal Camerata at the Athenauem Theater in Bucarest (Romania) and with the Boston Civic Symphony at Regis College, and recitals and chamber music concerts at the Stellenbosh Symposium, Sudafrica, at the Yamaha Center, Taiwan, at Vivace Vilnius Festival in Lituania, Gijon International Piano Festival in Spain and at the Boston Athenauem in USA. The Sanford-Hill Piano Series is in its 13th season, having hosted numerous international luminaries including multiple Cliburn and Tchaikovsky International medalists. The series is named in honor of its sponsors, Professor Emeritus Ford Hill and his former student Sibyl Sanford. The ticket proceeds support piano scholarships at WWU.
Parking for all Sanford-Hill concerts is free. Season ticket holders may park in lot 11G just south of the Performing Arts Center; all other patrons of Sanford-Hill may use lot 14G off of West College Way. Signs mark the lot entrances.
