'Deception Pass' starts Thursday in the PAC

Western Washington University Department of Theatre and Dance presents “Deception Pass: An American Story,” directed by Western Theatre faculty Deb Currier in the Performing Arts Center Mainstage Theater.

The play will show at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday through Saturday, Jan. 24-26, as well as on Wednesday through Saturday, Jan. 30-31 and Feb. 1-2. It will also show at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 27 and Feb. 3.

An original play written by Western Theatre instructor Kamarie Chapman, the Western performance will mark the Washington state premiere of this award-winning play.

“Deception Pass: An American Story” follows the story of Prudence Isaac, who is returning home to Whidbey Island for the funeral of her godfather. As Prudence struggles with the sadness of her visit, she is also overcome with the unpleasant memories of her past that wash up in the tides of her dreams. Guided by her grandmother and the ghosts of those haunting the bridge, Prudence finds herself being slowly pushed closer and closer to her estranged father, her family’s history, and the truth about her mother’s brutal murder.

Set on the magnificent bridge connecting Whidbey Island to the Washington mainland, the play investigates the most important parts of home and family connections. Can the struggles, losses, and triumphs of our ancestors help us navigate the churning waters of our own self-deception and longing for answers that may never come?

The play is intended for mature audiences and contains adult content.

Tickets are available through the Western Box Office and cost $12 for general admission; $10 for seniors, Western faculty and staff; and $8 for students. A limited selection of tickets will also be available at Village Books and the Community Food Co-op.
