Carver construction: What to expect June 19 to July 2

Construction continues on the Carver Academic Facility construction project on Western Washington University's Bellingham campus.

The project includes replacement of the building center section with a three-story addition and wrapping the east and south sides with new structure and glass windows and other exterior openings. The project will address urgently needed seismic reinforcement throughout the facility, replace numerous aging building systems, provide improved disabled access to classrooms, labs and offices, and allow for much better use of academic spaces.

Live video feeds of the construction project are available on the project website from the WWU Office of Facilities Development and Capital Budget.

Here's what to expect during the week of June 19:

Central Corridor:

  • Fireproofing
  • Rough-in mechanical/electrical/plumbing/fire systems
  • Priority wall framing

Central Corridor Roof:

  • Roofing

East Side Addition:

  • Detail/Decking/Welding

Gym C Addition:

  • Install sandwich truss (see map) – contingent on completion of truss assembly. On June 20 and 21, a very long (120 feet) sandwich truss will be lifted into Carver at the southeast corner of the construction site. For the safety of pedestrians, the existing path will be blocked off with construction “candle sticks” and danger tape as shown below. Two “spotters” will assist pedestrians through the area. The pedestrian detour will block ADA access to SL at the north entries; ADA access will be limited to the east entry off Haskell Plaza or south entry at the service road. Once the truss is safely within the building, the path will be reopened. The new sandwich truss will tie in the new roofing structure for the Gym C addition.
  • Structural steel
  • Place air handling units

1935/1970 Building:

  • Structural steel

 1959 Building/Gym A:

  • Roof abatement (weather dependent)
  • Install roof anchors
  • Place and reinforce slab on grade
