Topic: Measuring Positive Change in Urban Seas

Kathryn Sobocinski, associate professor of Marine and Coastal Science, Western Washington University

Topic: Estuaries and urban seas have a myriad of unique challenges that need to be assessed with novel approaches. This talk will introduce Cumulative Effects Evaluation, a new approach for bringing together disparate data sets to generate solutions.

About the Speaker: Kathryn Sobocinski is an associate professor of marine and coastal science at Western Washington University. She researches fish, fish habitats, the use of statistical and individual-based models, and the impacts of human disturbance and climate change in coastal ecosystems. She currently serves on the science advisory committee for the Northwest Straits Commission.

The Environmental Speaker Series is Western Washington University’s environmental science and conservation speaker series, inviting students, faculty, staff, and community members to deepen their knowledge of current issues and topics in environmental science. 

Guest speakers educate and inform about environmental science topics, including conservation; sustainability; energy; community engagement; and environmental justice. All speaker series events are free and open to the public.
