BELLINGHAM - Carmen Werder, director of Western Washington University’s Teaching-Learning Academy and Writing Instruction Support Program, WWU Libraries, will present “What’s a Meta-for?” at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16, in Communications Facility 110 on the WWU campus.

The event is free, open to the public and is part of WWU’s Turning Points Faculty Speaker Series, which celebrates and shares the wealth of knowledge and talent on Western’s campus.

Werder will review the theoretical set of ideas of understanding metaphors and share metaphors identified by WWU students and faculty.  These ideas will be the basis for Werder to suggest the implications of understanding metaphors for promoting civil discourse, formulating identity and deepening learning.

James Hanks and Martha Tarnawski, seniors within WWU’s Communication Department, will share their own stories of developing an understanding of metaphors and suggest how these understandings have benefited their learning.
