WWU's Border Policy Research Institute launches new interactive tool on Canada-US trade along the border

BPRI platform provides a web-based tool to facilitate analysis into the cross-border trade relationship between Canada and the US

Bellingham, WA — The Border Policy Research Institute has launched a new interactive tool that provides a comprehensive and engaging overview of cross-border trade dynamics between Canada and the United States. Designed for policymakers, researchers, business leaders, and anyone with an interest in trade, this resource delivers in-depth, region-specific insights into the interconnected border economies of these neighboring nations.

By providing data and analysis, including overviews of each region’s transportation connections and cooperation frameworks, this tool is designed to make complex trade dynamics and data more accessible and engaging.

“BPRI aims to provide complex data in an engaging and easy-to-use way with Trade in the Borderlands. The tool provides a foundation for future analysis into the Canada-US relationship,” said Laurie Trautman, Director of the Border Policy Research Institute.

Key Features of the Tool

  • Interactive Maps & Visualizations: Explore trade relationships by region with easy-to-understand visuals.
  • Regional Breakdown: Dive into specific trade dynamics between Canadian provinces and U.S. states along the border.
  • Clear highlights of trade dynamics: Quickly identify what is important to you with trade highlights, in text and visuals.
  • Contextual information: Understand the sociopolitical context in which trade relationships are happening, including at the regional level.

The Trade in the Borderlands tool is now live and ready for use. We invite you to explore it and discover the full range of trade insights it offers.

The development of the tool was a cooperative venture, with student funding support provided by the Borders in Globalization’s 21st Century Borders project research interns from College of the Environment & the College of Business and Economics at Western Washington University.
