WWU to stage 'HIR' April 12-21

Western Washington University’s Department of Theatre and Dance will stage a production of "HIR" by Taylor Mac, opening April 12 in the PAC.

Somewhere in the suburbs, Isaac has returned from the wars to help take care of his ailing father, only to discover a household in revolt. The insurgent: his mom. Liberated from an oppressive marriage, with Isaac’s newly out transgender sibling as her ally, she’s on a crusade to dismantle the patriarchy. But in Mac’s sly, subversive comedy, annihilating the past doesn’t always free you from it.

“The premise of the play explodes heteronormativity and patriarchy in a comical way,” Director Rich Brown said. “Taylor Mac writes passionately about exploding our sense of family in America and understands the need to give us breath through laughter - how we can see new world possibilities more clearly when we are laughing at the absurdities of the old world.”

Offering viewpoints often overlooked in the world of theatre, HIR features the first transgender character to appear in a mainstage production at Western Washington University.

HIR runs April 12 - 21. Tickets available through the Western Washington University Box Office or at (360) 650 - 6146.
