WWU QueerCon is Back for its 8th Year in Academic West this Saturday, April 27

QueerCon returns to campus this Saturday, April 27

The 8th Annual WWU QueerCon 2024 is an award-winning student club-run convention and conference created to celebrate queer creators and queer and intersectional representation in comics, arts, society, and media.

This year’s convention will be a one-day event held online and in Academic West on Saturday, April 27.  The all-ages main convention hours are from noon to 5 p.m., and features sparkle photo booth, local food, panels, table-top and board game rooms, Western Game Design expo, kid-friendly queer planetarium show, and live performances including a queer poetry open mic and the WWU Idol Club.  Tabling in Academic West during main convention hours include local vendors, nonprofits and businesses, independent artists, student creators, LGBTQ+ Western, and many WWU student clubs and organizations showing their support for the queer community.

The 1 p.m. keynote will feature Dizzy Phoria, local drag artist and host of all-trans drag show Euphoria, presenting on the intersections between drag and transgender identity and the use of art as a tool for community connection, political resistance, and personal/collective healing.  We are also excited for a very special guest speaker, Dr. Melynda Huskey, our own Vice President for Enrollment and Student Services, for her talk exploring the history and study of queer fandoms.  Check out these presentations and others on a range of topics: cosplay, game design, alterhumans, and queer and intersectional Afrofuturism through Janelle Monae.

From 5 - 8 p.m., there will be three 18+ after-hours features: queer planetarium show with Astro Erin, queer horror documentary screening with Western Scream Queens, and finally a drag show by WWU Royal Gambit Drag Club.
