WWU historian Daniel Chard to speak at Bellingham City Club

The Bellingham City Club’s July 22 meeting will feature a talk by Associate Professor of History Daniel Chard on “Authoritarianism in the U.S.”

Chard will draw from his research on U.S. history, the Cold War and national security to discuss how debates over terrorism have led to abuses of executive power and erosions of democratic norms that have helped set the stage for the present crisis of American democracy. 

Chard is the author of “Nixon’s War at Home: The FBI, Leftist Guerrillas, and the Origins of Counterterrorism,” published by University of North Carolina Press in 2021, and co-editor of “Science for the People: Documents from America’s Movement of Radical Scientists,” published by University of Massachusetts Press in 2018. He’s currently at work on his next book, “Remaking the Security State: America and the Politics of Terrorism from Watergate to 9/11.”
