BELLINGHAM – Western Washington University will host a special program, Odyssey of Science and Arts, for youth in grades 3-5 from 6:30-10:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 5.

Attendees will choose between two topics.

In, “Art Explosion: Radical Painting Methods,” LouAnn McKinley, art teacher at Lummi Nation Schools, will introduce young artists to new techniques for creativity. Students will experiment with eye-popping three-dimensional art, have a blast creating a large piece or series of smaller pieces, and discover a surge of excitement behind trying new methods.

In “Dynamic Earth: Volcanology,” led by Western’s science education specialists, youngsters will uncover the fascinating science behind what makes a volcano blow its top. In researching this phenomenon and through the creation of a volcano and lahar simulation, students will also learn about types of volcanoes and what leads to their formation.

“The Odyssey program provides a mutually rewarding opportunity; parents can enjoy an evening without kids, while their child explores an activity-based enrichment topic in a safe and fun college environment,” said Debbie Gibbons, WWU Youth Programs manager.

The cost of the program is $45 and includes instruction, materials, snack, and free 20-minute parking pass to make drop-off and pick-up easy.

Enrollment for Friday Odyssey of Science and Arts is limited and prompt registration is encouraged. Visit the Web for details, www.wwu.edu/youth or contact youth@wwu.edu or (360) 650-3308.
