Western to offer ‘Grammar for Editors’ class beginning Jan. 13

Western Washington University Extended Education will offer Grammar for Editors, a hybrid online/face-to-face course, which begins Jan. 15 and is open to all community members.

An intensive review of common grammatical problems, the workshop covers how professional editors address corrections in manuscripts or articles, and how they formulate advice in their working relationships with authors and writers.

The course combines modules as online projects with five evening sessions providing in-depth discussion. Instruction is delivered primarily through the online class, lectures are provided as written documents and class discussion is enabled through an online discussion board. The class is designed for people who work in fields and businesses that require editing skills to produce newsletters, website content, marketing materials, formal reports and similar publications.

Grammar for Editors is taught by Carolyn Dale, a Western journalism professor and experienced professional in the field of journalism, writing and editing. No prerequisites are required, but the course assumes basic knowledge of English grammar.

Cost is $260 plus one required textbook, and no formal Western admission is required. In-class sessions will meet 7-8:30 p.m. every other Monday from Jan. 13 to Mar. 10 in Western’s Communications Facility. Registration deadline is Thursday, Jan. 9.
