Western offers counseling, support after death of student Alex Binkerd

Western Washington University is providing counseling and support to the friends and family of Western student Alex Binkerd as they share their grief over his death.

Binkerd passed away early Wednesday at his home near Western’s campus. The Bellingham Police Department is investigating; the Whatcom County Medical Examiner will determine the cause of his death.

“Our campus community offers its deepest condolences to Alex’s family and friends,” said Eileen Coughlin, senior vice president and vice president for Enrollment and Student Services at Western. “We encourage students who knew Alex and may be in need of support to please contact our Counseling Center.”

Counseling and other support options are being communicated to students who knew Binkerd. Western Counseling Center staff members are available to any students seeking assistance. The Counseling Center is located in Old Main 540 and can be reached at 360-650-3164 during business hours.

A funeral for Alex Matthew Binkerd will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at Timberlake Christian Church, located at 4505 236th Ave NE, Redmond, WA 98053. Binkerd's parents would invite anyone who knew Alex to come and celebrate his life with them. They are very thankful for the thoughts and prayers.
