BELLINGHAM – The Western Gallery at Western Washingoton University will present “Spellbinding Beauty: Selections from the Lehmann African Art Collection” from Oct. 4 through Nov. 24.

The exhibition is divided into three areas emphasizing devotional, honorary, and utilitarian objects.  Admission is free and open to the public.

Hans and Thelma Lehmann opened the first gallery in Seattle devoted to African Art. The Nimba Gallery of Tribal African Art (1969-1982) featured cultural objects from civilizations in West and Central Africa. Monique Kerman, an instructor at Western who specializes in African Art, has selected powerful sculptural objects and brilliantly colored textiles from this family collection to highlight a range of aspects of African culture.

In conjunction with the exhibition, Kerman will present a free lecture entitled “African Art is a Whole Body Experience” on Wednesday, Nov. 3 at 3 p.m. in the Fine Arts Building, Room 238.  Following the lecture will be a viewing of the works in the Western Gallery.
