Viking Supported Agriculture Program Adds Fall/Winter Farm for 2020/2021 Season

Western's Office of Sustainability is facilitating its Viking Supported Agriculture (VSA) program that connects students, staff, and faculty to farmers who deliver boxes of their farm fresh items, a “farm box,” directly to campus. You can learn more about the benefits of connecting to farmers in this way at Sustainable Connections' CSA website. Getting good food to people in times of crisis and supporting local and sustainable agriculture is a highly supportive activity that each one of us may be able to participate in for the greater good of our community.  Please visit our website for more information: https://sustain.wwu.edu/viking-supported-agriculture/

This year, Boldly Grown Farm a fall/winter certified organic farm in Skagit County, is offering community supported agriculture to the Western community as part of the Viking Supported Agriculture (VSA) program.  They will start deliveries in November.  Due to the high level of interest expressed, Boldly Grown Farm is opening registration for their CSA early, anticipated to open the week of May 18, 2020.  You may sign up directly with the farm at https://www.boldlygrownfarm.com  Please identify yourself as a VSA participant if not using your wwu.edu email address to sign-up.

Donate A Share: Food security is currently a challenge for some of our community members. We have set up a dedicated fund to receive your donations to pay for a portion of a farm box for students in need. You may donate here:  https://foundation.wwu.edu/VikingSupportedAgriculture

Pick-Up Details: The Office of Sustainability is coordinating the pick-up location and dates. This year, the regular pick-up will be located at the Office of Sustainability, High Street Hall 25. Farms will deliver their items in either single-use containers and/or bags (due to virus concerns), or multi-use containers that are sanitized between uses.  Due to currently limited on-campus operations, an alternate pick-up location has been arranged at Ovn Wood Fired Pizza in Fairhaven. As soon as possible, the drop off/pick-up location will be moved back to the Office of Sustainability.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to linda.sterling@wwu.edu at the Office of Sustainability with questions.

Thank you for your interest in supporting our local farmers!

Warm wishes,
The Office of Sustainability Team
