The Winter Choral Concert at Western Washington University featured a performance of the 20th century masterwork "Carmina Burana," a cantata written for choral and solo singers created by German composer Carl Orff.

Western's Combined Choirs performed the work with soloists, pianists and percussionists in collaboration with a group of Western dancers.

Carl Orff chose from a collection of medieval texts found in a monastery in Munich, Germany. These songs and poems are full of humor, cynicism and rebelliousness. His music reflects these themes in a dramatic and rhythmic way that have excited audiences since its debut in 1937.

"Carmina Burana" was directed by Leslie Guelker-Cone, a professor in the Music Department at WWU. Contact the WWU Choral Department for more information at 360-650-3772.
