Western Washington University is one of the best colleges in the nation to work for, according to a new survey by The Chronicle of Higher Education.

The results, released in The Chronicle’s eighth annual report on The Academic Workplace, are based on a survey of more than 43,500 faculty and staff at 278 colleges and universities.

“We’re proud to once again be recognized among the best places to work in higher education. The credit for that goes directly to our outstanding faculty and staff, who share a deep dedication to serving our students and creating a caring and inclusive environment. Mutual respect and collaboration are defining aspects of our campus culture, so working at Western does feel like being a part of something bigger than oneself,” said Western President Sabah Randhawa.

Western, which now has been recognized four out of the last five years, won honors in two categories:

Teaching Environment
Tenure Clarity and Process

Results are reported for small, medium, and large institutions, with Western Washington University included among the large universities with 10,000 or more students. The survey results are based on a two-part assessment process: an institutional audit that captured demographics and workplace policies from each institution, and a survey administered to faculty, administrators, and professional support staff. The primary factor in deciding whether an institution received recognition was the employee feedback.

“Western is a great place to work because of university employees’ dedication, professionalism and appreciation for the importance of providing the best campus possible for our students,” said Chyerl Wolfe-Lee, assistant vice president for Human Resources.

To administer the survey and analyze the results, The Chronicle worked with ModernThink LLC, a strategic human capital consulting firm that has conducted numerous “Best Places to Work” programs, surveying hundreds of thousands of employees nationwide.

More than 550 faculty and staff have already contributed to the Western Stands for Washington campaign, a comprehensive $60 million campaign to raise funds for student scholarships, faculty research and campus programs. Now, Western is inviting its faculty and staff to make history as a University.

As part of a final fundraising push during the remaining months of the campaign, a WWU Faculty and Staff Campaign Advisory Board has been formed and is encouraging new, renewed and increased contributions from faculty and staff, with a goal of 20 percent participation by faculty and staff in FY 16. All contributors will be included on an honor roll to be published in Western Today and The Western Front, and the Advisory Board is aiming for extensive and heightened participation across campus.

The board, constituting faculty and staff from across campus, includes Co-Chairs Amir Abedi (Political Science) and David Hamiter (‘92) (ATUS), Linda Beckman (‘91) (Student Affairs), Tamara Belts (‘76) (Libraries), Leo Bodensteiner (Huxley College), John Bower (Fairhaven), Susan Brown (’01) (ATUS), Lise Fitzpatrick, (’08) (Extended Education), Vicki Hsueh (Political Science), Victor Nolet (Woodring), John Riopelle (Woodring), Karen Stout (Leadership/Communication Studies), Kami Westhoff (’98, ’02) (English) and Chyerl Wolfe-Lee (‘08) (Human Resources).

“It’s wonderful to have such commitment from across campus,” says Co-Chair Amir Abedi. “Western has already run a highly successful campaign. Together we hope to encourage a stream of contributions that will prove to be the icing on the cake. Please join us! The Faculty and Staff Wellness Program at Western Washington University was honored by Seattle Business magazine this week as a 2014 Leader in Health Care.

Western's program was the winner of the Achievement in Health Programs category.

The magazine honored 25 of Washington state’s health care innovators, CEOs, hospitals and other organizations at the sixth Leaders in Health Care Awards dinner Monday, Feb. 24.

Representing WWU at the Seattle dinner were Rich VanDenHul, vice president for Business and Financial Affairs; Chyerl Wolfe-Lee, assistant vice president of Human Resources; Kaylee Nightingale, employee development and wellness administrator; Heather Flaherty, Board of Trustees student representative; Marie Sather, director of Campus Recreation; LeaAnn Martin, dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences; Linda Keeler, from the Kinesiology/Exercise Psychology program in Physical Education, Health and Recreation; and Richard C. Veith, M.D., chief of Psychiatric Services at the University of Washington Medical Center.

Measure a wellness program by the enthusiasm of its participants, and Western Washington University’s is off the charts. After six years, more than 1,000 faculty and staff members on the Bellingham campus voluntarily take part.

“My fitness class has really been a life changer,” says one staff member in an online testimonial. “I may be in last place or walking amongst the runners,” offers another, “but I am out there.”

Western recognized as fit-friendly university

The Western Washington University Faculty & Staff Wellness Program has been recognized as a Platinum-Level Fit-Friendly University by the American Heart Association for helping employees improve their wellness.

“Physical activity and employee wellness are important priorities at Western. We are honored and excited to be recognized by the American Heart Association as a Platinum-Level Fit-Friendly University,” said Kaylee Nightingale, Health Promotion specialist. “We’re committed to providing the best workplace environment possible. This will benefit our employees’ health and produce continued positive results for our university overall.”

Chyerl Wolfe-Lee, director of Western’s Human Resources Department, said the award-winning program affirms the university’s commitment to promoting good health among its employees. Western’s Faculty and Staff Wellness Program, which is part of Western’s Human Resources Department and the Division of Business and Financial Affairs (BFA), offers faculty and staff a range of exercise and wellness programs.

The program has garnered three honors in just the past six months. In addition to being a Platinum Fit-Friendly University, Western was also the first university in the state of Washington to achieve Washington Worksite Wellness designation, and has also been given the prestigious statewide award of the Golden Apple.

Platinum-Level Fit-Friendly employers: offer employees physical activity options in the workplace; educate on healthy nutrition options; promote a wellness culture in the workplace; implement at least nine criteria outlined by the American Heart Association in the areas of physical activity, nutrition and culture, and demonstrate measurable outcomes related to workplace wellness.

Chyerl Wolfe-Lee, Western Washington University's director of human resources, has been named president of the local chapter of The College and University Professional Association for Human Resources.

The Washington state chapter of CUPA-HR was established three years ago. Wolfe-Lee will serve for one year as president, ending in July 2012. Her primary responsibility is to provide leadership for the chapter, with one important focus being the planning and execution of the Washington state CUPA-HR conference held each year.
