Summer Session at WWU

Your guide to courses, resources, and recreation

If you stroll through campus between mid-June and September, you will notice that Summer Session offers a different experience from the rest of the academic year. After the Spring Quarter finals have been submitted and the commencement ceremonies have wrapped, the typically busy campus becomes a more focused, serene environment. Despite the quieter vibes, students can still access many of WWU's academic offerings, services, and facilities. This guide highlights key differences and changes to keep in mind.

When and What is Summer Session?

While some students may be apprehensive about Summer Session due to associations with “summer school,” taking classes from WWU during this period can open new academic opportunities. Summer courses at Western often have smaller class sizes and increased access to instructors. Summer Session also allows access to high-demand courses that may be full throughout the rest of the school year. In addition to Western students, many summer courses are open to high school students, international students, and members of the community.

Summer Session courses come in two lengths: 6 weeks and 9 weeks. Both sessions start on June 25, with 6-week courses ending on August 2 and 9-week courses concluding on August 23, allowing ample time for students to enjoy a sunny summer break.

What’s Open on Campus

Despite reduced campus activity, many student services, facilities, and resources remain operational throughout the summer quarter:

  • Tech Support: ATUS is open for walk-ins and online tech support on Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Advising: The Academic Advising & Student Achievement Center has advising drop-ins open for Zoom or phone calls from 10:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. in 15-minute meetings from June 17 to July 2. The Academic Advising office is open for regular hours through the rest of the summer.
  • Campus Recreation: Summer is a great time to hit the gym! During the summer, WWU Campus Recreation’s hours are Monday to Thursday from 6:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Food: Most Dining at WWU locations will remain open throughout the quarter and weekly hours of operation and menus are posted on their website.

Other offices on campus may offer modified hours and typically post schedule changes to their websites.

Where Can I Cool Off?

For those seeking summer enjoyment, WWU's Lakewood facility on Lake Whatcom provides a perfect retreat. This facility is free for students, alumni, and faculty, offering relief on hot summer days with access to small sailboats, kayaks, and paddleboards. Sailing and windsurfing lessons are also available during Lakewood’s operating hours from noon to 7:30 p.m., Monday to Sunday, throughout June and August.
