Students for Renewable Energy to participate in Climate Impacts Day event May 5

The Students for Renewable Energy student club at Western Washington University plans to participate in the May 5 Connecting the Dots event in Bellingham.

Participants plan to gather at noon at Bellingham City Hall for an "Our Goal! No Coal" walk to Maritime Heritage Park, where various groups -- including SRE -- will have information tables set up and where speakers will share stories. Bellingham Mayor Kelli Linville will share a proclamation at 1 p.m., claiming May 5 as Climate Impacts Day in Bellingham, according to a press release from Jill MacIntyre Witt, a volunteer organizer with 350.org, the original creators of Climate Impacts Day.

Participants will wear colorful dots representing their concerns on the potential coal shipping terminal in Bellingham and on the issue of coal in general. The family-friendly event is part of a worldwide day of action in communities throughout the world connecting the dots among climate impacts such as extreme weather, global warming and the causes of the crisis.

"This is going to be a fun event that people can bring their kids to," Witt said.
