Student services, resources, and events offer multicultural learning opportunities, support for all WWU students

Western’s student development-focused Office of Multicultural Student Services, Disability Access Center, and LGBTQ+ Western, have a winter quarter line-up of engaging events, workshops, and community-building opportunities for all students.

Whether it is dropping into a casual lunch-and-learn session or participating in a workshop to support students as they build welcoming communities, there is something here for everyone.

“These student development workshops provide relevant learning for students that can be directly applied to one’s life in class, residence halls, club leadership, on a team, and in the many other communities students are part of," said Litav Langley, assistant vice president for Access, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Western’s Division of Enrollment and Student Services. "For example, the weekly lunch and learns are such a joyful site of learning in community. I am grateful to the staff, students, and faculty who lead these sessions every Wednesday. From discussing intersectionality through the lens of Janelle Monáe’s creative work on Jan. 31 to celebrating Douglass Day on Feb. 14 with a transcribe-a-thon and a birthday cake bake-off, these are wonderful (and delicious) times to step away from studying and work to be together.”

Some of the upcoming offerings from the student services ADEI Unit include:

• Tools for Building Inclusive Communities, the ADEI Unit's workshop series, which builds on sessions offered in Fall. Some sessions are relevant for many student staff; supervisors of student staff might encourage their student employees to attend one or more workshops. Workshops are listed on the unit’s events page and begin today with Accessibility 101 at 4pm and Being an Upstander tomorrow at 4pm.
• Students can connect with academic advising, math tutoring, writing support, and disability and career services regularly in the Multicultural Center, Black Student Coalition, and Disability Outreach Center. The schedule of these resources in the unit’s spaces is online.
• Weekly Multicultural Center Community Lunches happen every Wednesday at noon in the Multicultural Center. Topics for each lunch and learn are on the events page.
• The Black Student Coalition has planned a wonderful series of events for February celebrating Black History Month. Details are posted online as they are finalized.
