Stay safe on campus this fall with these tips from Chief of Police Katy Potts

As the first quarter of the academic year unfolds, it's essential to reflect on the importance of personal safety, well-being, and community support. At Western, we're committed to fostering an environment where everyone feels safe and protected. Here are a few ways to stay safe on campus while enjoying everything our university and the surrounding city have to offer. Watch Katy's video message here.

Bike Safety

Biking is an excellent way to get around campus, but it's crucial to know the rules to ensure the safety of both cyclists and pedestrians. Follow the 3 mph speed limit when within 10 feet of pedestrians, and be aware of designated bike walk zones. Visit the Active Transportation Office in Old Main to register your bike and obtain a secure lock. By doing so, you'll help prevent bike theft – one of the most common calls for our campus police.

Weather and Darkness

As the seasons change, you may find yourself navigating campus during dark hours. Stay vigilant and follow these tips:

  • Use well-lit paths and avoid walking alone.
  • Carry a flashlight or use your phone's built-in light for visibility.
  • Wear reflective or bright clothing to be seen by others.

While enjoying Western Wednesdays in the downtown area, take advantage of your student discounts and remember to stay aware of your surroundings.

Western Safe App

Download the new Western Safe app for easy access to emergency contacts, safety resources, and helpful features like the virtual safety escort. Interested in a one-on-one tutorial or organizing a training session for your club, team, or residence hall? Reach out to University Police, and we'll set it up.

Expressive Activity and Safety

Our UPD officers are dedicated to ensuring the rights to free speech and expression of all individuals on campus while maintaining a safe environment that does not disrupt instruction and the daily operations of the university. If you have any questions or concerns, visit our website for a complete guide on expressive activities on campus.

Personal Well-being

This quarter has presented unique challenges, and we understand the importance of self-care, compassion, and togetherness. Check in with yourself, your family and friends, and remember, WWU offers all kinds of resources to support you all through your time here.
