Scott Young selected as new CBE dean

Scott Young has been selected to serve as the next dean of the College of Business and Economics at Western Washington University, Provost Brent Carbajal announced today.

Young, now chair of the Department of Management and professor of Management at DePaul University, will start at Western on Sept. 1.

“We are excited to welcome Dr. Scott Young to Western's leadership team.  Dr. Young has an excellent record of administrative success at DePaul University, and I look forward to working with him to further the mission of the College of Business and Economics,” Carbajal said.  “Dr. Young's experience with academic leadership, collaborative initiatives, and with engaging external constituents will serve faculty and students well. “

Young succeeds Craig Dunn, who was appointed in 2014 to a two-year fixed term as CBE dean.  “I want to take advantage of this opportunity to express appreciation to Dr. Craig Dunn for his service to and leadership of the College,” said Carbajal.

Carbajal also announced that Dunn will be appointed Western’s Wilder Professor of Business and Sustainability, effective Sept. 1.

"I am very honored and excited to have the opportunity to lead the College of Business and Economics,” Young said. “I am very impressed by the dedicated faculty and staff who have made the school a great place and look forward to working in such a beautiful setting.”

Young has a doctorate in Management from Georgia State University, an MBA from Georgia College and State University and a bachelor’s degree in Journalism from the University of Georgia.

Young is an experienced higher education administrator. He has served for 12 years as chair of the Department of Management which, with 70 full-time and part-time faculty, is one of the largest in the nation. During his tenure as chair, they have hired a dozen new faculty and every candidate for tenure has succeeded. He also co-authored a grant that brought in $7.5 million from the Hilton Foundation to initiate a School of Hospitality, which now enrolls over 200 students. He directs the BMO Harris – Chicago Housing Authority Leadership and Entrepreneurship program for disadvantaged youths.

Previously, he served as chair of Management and associate dean of the University of Utah’s David Eccles School of Business. His scholarship interests focus on sustainability and he co-authored the textbook, “Sustainability Essentials for Business.” Young has won awards and recognitions for teaching and innovation and is widely published.
