Oct. 27 discussion to address meaning of 'liberal education' at WWU

A conversation aimed at developing Western Washington University's position as a liberal arts university will take place from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, in the Learning Commons in Wilson Library Room 270.

Western has and continues to define itself as a liberal arts institution, but it may not be clear to all exactly what that means. To be effective as a liberal arts institution and to articulate Western's mission to its students and the general public, it's critical that Western undertake a periodic review of what is meant by a "liberal education."

The conversation is being held at the behest of the provost, the vice provost for undergraduate education and the Committee on Undergraduate Education at Western.

Framing questions that will guide the dialogue:

  • How would we define a liberal arts education in terms of its purpose/goals?
  • What are some of the challenges facing us as an institution that prides itself in providing a liberal arts education?
  • What are our current strengths in the GURs and in undergraduate education generally in ensuring that students are experiencing a liberal arts education?
  • What directions might Western and its GUR program take in more effectively engaging and promoting liberal education?
  • How does our campus communicate the language of liberal education in promotional and curricular materials?
  • How might we better communicate to key constituents (e.g. trustees, donors, political leaders, community members) the importance of a liberal education in today’s society?

This "Critical Dialogue on Liberal Arts" will begin with some framing comments by Professor Daniel Larner and then continue with a discussion of two short readings: “Practicing Liberal Education: Formative Themes in the Re-invention of Liberal Learning” and the “AAC&U Statement on Liberal Learning,” published by the Association of American Colleges and Universities. After highlighting some of the key ideas from the readings, work groups will focus on specific discussion prompts and report back findings.
