Merriman to give financial tips to graduating seniors April 28

Western Washington University’s College of Business and Economics will host Paul Merriman for a special talk on personal finance and investing on Monday, April 28.

His featured presentation is designed for WWU seniors and will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. April 28 in Communications Facility Room 110, followed by a question-and-answer session. The topic of discussion will be “The 10 most important financial steps seniors should take in the next 12 months.”

This is a great opportunity for students, especially seniors, to improve their understanding of personal financial behavior and decisions as they prepare to graduate and enter the work force.

Merriman also will teach a section of Pamela La Borde’s FIN 216 class from noon to 2 p.m. in Arntsen Hall Room 219 on April 28 and a session of Farrokh Kahnamoui’s FIN 215 class at noon April 29 in Haggard Hall Room 345.

Paul Merriman, a WWU and CBE alum, is a nationally recognized authority on mutual funds, index investing, asset allocation and both buy-and-hold and active management strategies. Retired from Merriman, the Seattle-based investment advisory firm he founded in 1983, he continues to educate investors through weekly articles at Marketwatch.com, and via free eBooks, podcasts, articles, mutual fund and ETF recommendations and more, at his website. In 2013 he created The Merriman Financial Education Foundation, dedicated to providing comprehensive financial education to investors. A major project of the Foundation is funding the curriculum development and teaching of the 4-credit course, "Personal Investing" (for non-finance majors), at Western Washington University, which will become a way to fulfill part of the Quantitative & Symbolic Reasoning GUR, beginning Fall 2014.
