Keep your clutter out of the gutter! 'Move Out Madness' set for June 14

Feeling bogged down with clutter? Don’t leave it in the gutter! This move out season, help us divert stuff from landfills and work towards zero waste. Zero Waste Western, a program of the Office of Sustainability, in collaboration with the Campus Community Coalition, is hosting Move Out Madness on Friday, June 14.

Drop off your clutter and/or find a new-to-you treasure from 10 a.m.to 3 p.m.; community pick-up is from 4-5 p.m.

Move Out Madness helps to keep the streets of Bellingham clean by diverting used items from the waste stream during move-out. Each year, Move Out Madness continues to reduce Bellingham's previous problem of student belongings being left on city sidewalks after move out.

Run by students, for students, there will be multiple locations where students can drop off unwanted belongings and/or pick up anything they may need from items donated by others. At 3:00 p.m. all remaining donated goods with be collected by various nonprofits or properly disposed of by the Zero Waste Western team. Non-profits participating this year include: Value Village, House 2 Home, Habitat for Humanity, and Appliance Depot.

Acceptable goods, at all three locations, include: reusable household items, clothing, non-perishable food, recyclable materials, and landfill waste. This service is free to all Western Washington University students; a valid student ID is required.

Students who do not have access to a vehicle and have larger items to discard can make arrangements to have those items picked up for a $20 fee. To make pick-up arrangements for larger items, please email ZeroWaste@wwu.edu.

Move Out Madness locations include:

  • York Neighborhood - Harriet Spaniel Park: 400 Block of Whatcom Street
  • Sehome Neighborhood - Laurel Park: Laurel & Billy Frank Jr. Street
