Dana Jack, a psychology professor at Western Washington University, pioneered research on what she calls self-silencing: holding back your feelings when they might threaten a relationship, and staying outwardly agreeable while resentment builds underneath.

“If you are self-silencing, you are disconnecting, but you’re disconnecting not only from the other person but also from yourself,” Jack told HealthDay.
