The American Revolution we need today

For Americans, there is no more important event than the American Revolution. Not only did it establish the United States, but laid out, in the Declaration of Independence, the American creed. The Declaration pluckily stated that “all men are created equal” and entitled to govern themselves. That creed has inspired generations of people at home and across the world.

But today we are unsure about that Revolution and what it means, or even whom it was for. As a country, we seem hopelessly divided and hateful of each other. A country that cannot share a past will have a hard time sharing a future. That is why I feel such sadness on our country’s 250th birthday. As an immigrant, I know how powerful this country’s story can be. It is heartbreaking to see so many Americans losing faith in it when we need it more than ever.
