Essay: 2027 brings bold new chapter for Indigenous storytelling

A cultural resurgence is underway here and rippling outward. More and more Coast Salish, First Nations and Indigenous writers, artists, filmmakers and knowledge holders are stepping into mainstream culture. They are taking up space, reviving lifeways and languages, sharing stories and inspiring the next generation. Keep an eye out for murals featuring Native art (including along the side of Setting Sun Circle where the alley meets Holly Street), as well as gallery exhibitions, film screenings and live performances. Western Washington University is opening a Coast Salish-style longhouse to support Native students. I urge you to visit these spaces and learn from these experiences.
