Hundreds of high school students attend College in the High School Project Showcase at WWU

About 280 students from Whatcom County high schools visited campus May 21 for a first-ever Project Showcase for leadership students in WWU's College in the High School programs.

Western Washington University’s Morse Leadership Institute, the President’s Office, and Outreach and Continuing Education sponsored the event for students in leadership classes at Bellingham, Sehome, Squalicum, Ferndale, and Lynden high schools, as well as the Latinos in Action Club (LIA) at Squalicum .

High school students were on campus for several hours and could choose to participate among a variety of activities, including campus tours, a scavenger hunt, bingo, arts and crafts. Students were able to meet with an Admissions counselor to learn more about enrolling at WWU, as well as meet other leadership-oriented students from across Whatcom County.

The students shared their group’s accomplishments from the year via video presentations of their work engaging in community service, planning assemblies and events, and sharing their impact on their communities. The hope is for this to be a yearly event where students interested in leadership across the region can connect with and support each other.

The WWU in the High School program provides high school teachers with an opportunity to collaborate with Western faculty to deliver college-level academic courses to academically prepared students in Washington state high schools. The courses provide college level credits at no cost to the student, and the credits can be applied to WWU general education requirements in many disciplines.
