David Feingold's “Serenade for the Deep State” featured in May 18 Guitar Concert

The Western Washington University Department of Music presents the annual Guitars of Western concert Friday, May 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center Concert Hall. The performance will feature a debut piece by Professor David Feingold called “Serenade for the Deep State” written expressly for the May 18 performance. The concert is free and open to the public.

The 5-minute piece will be performed by the full Guitar Orchestra. “The students had their work cut out to pull this piece together,” says Feingold of the new work. “It’s texturally dense and rhythmically challenging.” Feingold was inspired to write the work just after the inauguration of President Trump when Steve Bannon proclaimed “we have begun to deconstruct the deep state”.

“It’s likely that few people here in America realized we had such a thing,” Feingold mused. “This piece is a bit of fun and an effort to provide relief around that idea and remains politically ambiguous in doing it.” “Serenade for the Deep State” comprises three movements: “Status Quo;” “Conquest and Surrender;” and “Bring on Some Blues.”

The evening’s program will also include a work by Cuban composer Leo Brouwer called “Cuban Landscape with Rain,” as well as work by Vivaldi and student solo performances.
