Critical AI Literacies Collective to hold Nov. 17 town hall meeting on AI in education
The Critical AI Literacies Collective (CALC) invites Western faculty, staff, and students to a fall town hall meeting at 4 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 17, in Parks Hall 146, where participants can discuss artificial intelligence (AI) in education.
Caroline Hardin, professor of Computer Science and SMATE (Science, Math, and Technology Education), will give opening remarks on “Large Language Models and Learning,” followed by an open town-hall-style discussion moderated by:
- Assistant Professor Claudia Johnson, Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies
- Professor Amites Sarkar, Math
- Emily Spracklin, Western Libraries
- Assistant Professor Xi Wang, Environmental Studies and Institute for Energy Studies
The event will be followed by a coffee and tea reception from 5-5:30 p.m..
This idea for this open meeting came out of an October teach-in on “AI in Education: Dreams, Nightmares, Realities.” CALC is planning future teach-ins for the Winter and Spring quarters to address other topics of interest to past teach-in participants, including generative AI and water use, legal issues around AI tools and privacy, and the impacts of chatbots on users’ health and well-being.
