Compass 2 Campus Program Under New Leadership

Maria Timmons Flores will be leading Western’s Compass 2 Campus (C2C) program on an interim basis.

Anselmo Villanueva, the former C2C executive director, is pursuing other professional opportunities. Timmons Flores, associate professor of TESOL-Elementary Education at Woodring College of Education, will begin on Aug. 20.

“Maria brings a wealth of knowledge, experience, and contacts with school districts, which the program will greatly benefit from.  She also has extensive experiences in service learning and in college access with culturally and linguistically diverse youth,” said Horacio Walker, dean of Woodring College.

Walker said that Western remains “completely committed” to the program, which began at Western in 2009.

Compass 2 Campus is a proactive effort that sends trained WWU student mentors into schools in order to get more 5th through 12th grade students to see themselves as lifelong learners.  The highly successful program started by Cyndie Shepard at Western provides Western student mentors in school districts throughout Whatcom and Skagit counties.
