Celebrating Latine Heritage Month: "La Comunidad – Avanzando Juntos"

As WWU students return to our main campus in Bellingham, among the many celebratory and educational opportunities to join are those in celebration of Latine Heritage Month. This is also recognized as Latino/a/x or Hispanic Heritage Month. It traditionally runs from September 15 to October 15 annually, and also overlaps with the kickoff of WWU's Fall Quarter.

This month-long celebration is dedicated to honoring the diverse Latine cultures and communities across the United States, as well as acknowledging the past, present, and future achievements of Latine individuals.

First up on the slate of events and activities for the month will be the Multicultural Center's first Lunch and Learn: September 27 at 12 p.m. on the 7th floor of the Viking Union. Join us as we discuss the term “Latine” and the Latine identity. This discussion will be led by student leaders from the Latine Student Union.

La Comunidad – Avanzando Juntos

This year's Latine Heritage Month carries the theme "La Comunidad – Avanzando Juntos" (The Community - Advancing Together), underscoring the importance of unity within the Latine community, emphasizing mutual support in the face of systemic challenges. "Avanzando Juntos" serves as a powerful reminder to preserve our cultural roots while embracing intergenerational mentorship as a means to uplift students, staff, and faculty members alike. This practice embodies values of community, love, and respect for the wisdom passed down through generations.

Western's commitment to the Latine community extends beyond this designated month, and the university encourages the ongoing recognition and celebration of Latine heritage throughout the year.

About Latine Heritage Month

Each year, Americans observe Latine Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15. The observation of Latine Heritage Month started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402. This month celebrates the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively. Information provided by National Hispanic Heritage Month.
