Career networking, identity development through social media among the topics at Tech Tonic expo April 10
Society’s roles within social media – whether as a tool for marketing yourself and your career path or as a shaper of our online identities – are the two speaker topics at Western’s annual Tech Tonic technology expo on April 10 in the Wilson Library Reading Room.
Tech Tonic 2014, “Get Yourself Out There: Making Sense of Social Media,” is free and open to the public.
The morning speaker, from 10-11 a.m., is Assistant Professor of Marketing Mark Staton, who will present “Career Networking Through Digital Marketing.” Staton will go over some of the simple steps available to both students and those already in the work force to boost career opportunities through social media.
The afternoon speaker, from 2-3 p.m., is Assistant Professor of Psychology Adriana Manago, who will present “Growing up with Social Media: New Challenges and Opportunities for Identity Development.” In her talk, Manago will discuss how young people can negotiate the landscapes of social media in productive ways to mobilize social resources and nurture a healthy sense of self.
In between the two presentations, Tech Tonic will host its lightning round sessions – quick, 15-minute presentations on software tools and technology. Topics include Evernote, Google Docs, Zotero, digital photography, “Facebook Fails,” Touchcast, Social Media for Businesses, Flickr, ByWord, Crafting a Social Media Strategy, the new WWU mobile app, and more. A booth will be set up specifically to demo the new app and to help with installation.
A complete schedule of lightning rounds and more information on Tech Tonic is available at the Tech Tonic blog at wwutechtonic.wordpress.com.
