Policy regarding Dogs and Other Animals Revised

The revised policy, now known as POL-U5620.04 Allowing Animals on University Property, was approved and adopted by Western’s President on Oct. 3, 2017. 

Major changes to the policy include:

• Addresses all animals not just dogs and service animals
• Exceptions are listed for when animals may be brought into university buildings and outdoor events
• Service animals and emotional support animals are addressed
• Handler responsibility is more clearly explained
• Enforcement is addressed

Specific standards regarding service animals and emotional support animals in the workplace, academic spaces, and residence life are currently under development and will be distributed upon completion. However, the revised policy indicates the appropriate contacts for those areas that may be used in the mean time to address questions and concerns.
